We were honoured to have Mr David Makhura, Premier of the Gauteng Province and Mrs Graça Machel at the official opening of Steyn City that took place last month. In addition, Mrs Machel planted saplings that originated from river bushwillow (Combretum erythrophyllum) seeds that her late husband Nelson Mandela planted seven years ago, at the official ground breaking ceremony for Steyn City.
Also in attendance were local school children from the Muzomuhle School in neighbouring Diepsloot as well as a host of distinguished guests including: Carolyn Steyn, Steyn City Properties CEO Giuseppe Plumari and local community representatives.
Speaking at the event Mrs Machel said that the personal relationship between Douw and Madiba had become part of our country’s history given that Madiba wrote South Africa’s first constitution and his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom while staying with Douw after his release from prison.
She added that it was fitting that Steyn City was celebrating Madiba through a park; “For many years to come whoever lives at or visits Steyn City will enjoy the spirit of Madiba that will be here forever, through the trees that we have planted.
It is important to have buildings but it is perhaps more important to have trees, which celebrate his life far better than a statue because of them being deeply rooted in the soil of our nation.”
The exceptional interest in the newly launched Steyn City Lifestyle Resort has seen the sale of 67% of the first freehold stands released in Phase I, and a 100% uptake of the apartments released in the new Show Village during the launch phase. This equates to R900-million in land and build sales, revealing just how strong market appetite is for this ‘first of its kind’ property development where pedestrianised living is at the fore of our design and the public has access to already built product and can view the infrastructure investment upfront.
As a result, Steyn City Properties Management team is currently analysing the data from the sales achieved during the launch, the outcome of which will determine how best to structure future phases of development to meet and tailor market specific demands. This will see the announcement of new off-plan offerings in the next few weeks to potential buyers and investors.
Look out for updates in forthcoming issues.
In line with our month of ‘firsts’ the golf course at Steyn City also opened on 1 April in response to unprecedented public interest that has seen its management team inundated with requests from interested members of the public who wish to play a round of golf.
Steyn City’s Management’s original strategy was to host invitationals for VIPs and potential buyers until the official launch of the lifestyle resort in March 2015, after which golf course membership would be open to Steyn City homeowners.
However, Steyn City Properties CEO Giuseppe Plumari says; “Due to overwhelming interest, we took a decision to open the course for play to members of the public from 1 April 2015. We will revert to our original strategy once we reach critical mass but we only anticipate reaching capacity in a few years’ time, providing ample opportunity for golf enthusiasts to book a round at ‘The Club at Steyn City’ and experience Nicklaus Design at its best.”
